Historic Fischerhus House Traudel

The small, 750-year-old fishing village of Altwarp is located on a peninsula on the German side of the Szczecin Lagoon, not far from the seaside resort of Ueckermünde and only about 13 kilometres from the Baltic Sea as the crow flies.

Our holiday guests are surrounded by lots of water with countless natural beaches and its famous, large inland dunes and the special, pleasant sea air in this former climatic and spa resort.

The fishing village is located directly on the lagoon, so you have an excellent distant view of the islands of Usedom and Wollin.
Directly adjacent to the dunes is the historic, thatched fisherman's cottage "Lütt Hauke", which was renovated in 2018/19. It was built around 1750 in the traditional Pomeranian half-timbered style. Simple fishermen's houses are half-timbered houses with thatched or reed roofs, as they are called here, and are characteristic of the style of the lagoon coast.

Features:
House history: For centuries, the traditional fishermen's and captain's houses were characteristic of the individual villages and the Pomeranian region. We are all the more pleased that we have been able to save some of these old gems from decay and restore them to their former beauty and cosiness. A few years ago, we gently and professionally renovated the "Godewind" fisherman's house ***** in the same place and now the "Lütt Hauke" fisherman's house ***** in order to preserve the special charm of these historic fishermen's houses. All structural defects were rigorously removed.

The Fischer Hus Lütt Hauke has been classified with 5 out of 5 stars by the German Tourism Association since autumn 2021.
You will receive the 5-star level if both flats are booked for 4 people, in which case we provide bed linen and towels free of charge.

The thatched half-timbered house lies quietly on its large plot, so of course it was clear to us that we had to restore its original proportions, for example by removing the large extensions, which had nothing to do with the traditional half-timbered house. We have carefully supplemented Lütt Hauke with modern but timeless elements, such as in the bathrooms, so that you have every modern comfort at your disposal. The house is made exclusively from natural materials. It is therefore completely ecological. There is no polystyrene or plastic. Accordingly, the indoor air is always pleasant. All the bricks, even those on the terraces, are handmade in the Hundisburg brickworks in Saxony-Anhalt. As is the perennial marsh lime. In this way, we were also able to make a small contribution to the local manufactory, which is also using this income to renovate the castle there.
The house is cosy and warm in winter thanks to its good insulation and state-of-the-art heating technology. A wood-burning stove in each flat can provide additional cosy moments on cold winter days. The ceilings of the parlours are 2.17 m high, all other ceilings are significantly higher. All doors / stairways are over 1.82 metres. Both flats each have a staircase to the upper floor, which is very easy to walk up.

The Fischer Hus with its garden house is a non-smoking house, in a very large garden of approx. 1,260 sqm and only approx. 350 m from the beach and 400 m from the harbour. Even in the hottest summers, the old house remains pleasantly cool, partly because there is always a pleasant breeze on the coast. Statistically, the Haff Baltic Sea region has the most hours of sunshine in Germany. So it is not "luck" that the sun shines, but a statistically proven fact. The coast of the lagoon and Baltic Sea has of course been characterised by fishing for centuries. So what could be more natural than choosing a historic fisherman's cottage as a romantic holiday home?

For the guests of the flat Traudel:
Breakfast terrace with teak table and chairs as well as storage space on the gable side and parasol.

You are welcome to eat the delicious fruit from our trees and bushes. Please take the following statement with humour: Through our years of rental experience with the Fischerhaus Godewind, also located in Altwarp: Holiday guests who feel the urge to stay busy on holiday or simply want to get nice things with for the fun of it, for which we of course understand, are welcome to engage in simple gardening such as mowing the lawn or pruning roses. Then you have your own private "active wellness holiday"...

Special features:
Maximum occupancy: When booking, please take into account the maximum occupancy of 4 persons for the flat Annerose 75 square metres and 2 persons plus child for the flat Traudel 69 square metres.
You can bring 1 baby/toddler per flat. And 1 dog per flat. These are the binding maximum occupancies.
The landlord is occasionally in the house to prepare the free flats for the next guests, or to maintain the garden when you go on excursions and are not disturbed by the lawnmower. We also take care of the winter maintenance so that you don't get snowed in. So we are always available for you if you have any problems. Even if nobody is on site, we can be reached by telephone at any time.
Our house car parks are exclusively for 1 car per holiday flat. Please bring boats and dinghies to the areas in the village marked as "harbour". And caravans and trailers to the areas marked "Caravan parking space", also at the harbour. Neither our house car park nor our garden nor the open spaces around it are designated for this purpose.

Pets:
One (1) well-groomed and well-behaved dog per flat is welcome. Please be considerate of other holiday guests and villagers. Please bear in mind that if families with small children have booked the other half of the house, they will be playing and spending time in the grounds. You may bring a dog up to 60 cm shoulder height. We will charge a surcharge per night for this on arrival. The entire property is enclosed by a dachshund-proof picket fence. We would like to point out that the garden is not a dog-walking area, but a playground for the children of our holiday guests and it goes without saying that you should NEVER leave your four-legged friend unattended in the house and garden.

Weather:
On a ten-year average, the lagoon coast, like the Baltic Sea coast, has by far the most hours of sunshine per year, with only a few small regions in southern Germany. It is therefore not a "stroke of luck" that the sun shines, but statistically much more likely than in the rest of Germany. If the weather is "bad", this does not mean continuous rain, but at worst "changeable", i.e. it rains once and it can be permanently sunny again. A whole day of rain is very rare, even in March/April. As is usual on the coast, it tends to be windy. This means that even in the hottest summers it is never as stuffy as in other parts of Germany. Pomeranian winters are cold and covered in deep snow. The winter service works very well. Mosquitoes: Due to the frequent wind, there are always far fewer mosquitoes on the coast than inland. On the Szczecin Lagoon, the vast majority of mosquitoes are not the mosquitoes you are familiar with, but lagoon mosquitoes. You can recognise them by their fluffy antennae. These mosquitoes NEVER bite. They don't eat anything at all. They only make love. Until the battery runs out, which is why they die on their own after 1-3 days and can be easily removed from clothes in the washing machine. If at all, mosquitoes only come for 30-45 minutes at dusk, i.e. between 10.00 and 10.30 p.m. in summer, because it doesn't dawn before then. If you want to sit outside that late when there is no wind, you have to spray yourself. You have absolutely mosquito-proof curtains on all the important windows so that you can also ventilate crossways.

Please do NOT smear any animals on the walls.

Refurbishment / renovation condition:
Renovation work is regularly carried out by us in both fishermen's houses during non-booking periods. All electrical installations fulfil modern standards. Power failures are rare and are quickly rectified. The water from all pipes is drinkable, the entire installation in the house and village/region is new and lead-free. The Altwarp water also tastes very good. Even the lagoon itself fulfils drinking water standards. So you don't have to worry if your offspring takes a sip while bathing.

Coast:
Naturally, a fisherman's cottage is close to the water. You have a little view of the water from the property, as this house was built on a dune. Lütt Hauke is about 350 metres from the beach. This is a small village beach, not huge but never overcrowded. Two other bathing spots in/near the village. Two other very beautiful beaches max. 20 minutes by bike, very easy to cycle through beautiful coastal scenery.
All the beaches in the region are maintained by the local authorities during the season and the water quality is monitored by the regional authorities. Everything is small and manageable and, unlike the Baltic Sea coast, the region favours gentle tourism. There are no traffic jams, lack of parking spaces, high parking fees and visitor's taxes on the lagoon coast as there are on the Baltic coast.

If desired, a canoe is available for a small fee in the garden of the other fisherman's house Godewind near the beach. We don't have life jackets, but the lagoon is very shallow at the village beach and the reeds, making it ideal for small children and safe for ice skating in winter. It is refreshing even in hot summers, never as icy as the Baltic Sea and has no jellyfish as it is fresh water. Fishing has characterised the village since 1150, and the fishermen are happy to take you on an early morning tour of the lagoon in their small wooden boats for a small fee.
Just ask the many fishermen in the village.

A two-masted wooden fishing boat has been refurbished for excursions and departs several times a day from its home harbour in Altwarp for trips across the lagoon. Further boat trips from Ueckermünde to Swinemünde, Kamminke, Kaiserbäder, Szczecin, Neuwarp, Rieth, ... Since summer 2020, an original replica of a merchant cog has been moored in the seaside resort of Ueckermünde and offers tourists trips on the lagoon. Village and surroundings: The locals in the village and region are very!!! friendly. Altwarp is situated on the tip of a peninsula. You will experience pure nature, as the village is located directly in the (!) nature park "Stettiner Haff" and is therefore surrounded by a very extensive coastal landscape with water, dunes, marshes and alluvial forests. This huge nature park has its own administration, which organises hikes, bike and canoe tours (beaver, ...) and offers them at reasonable prices.
In recent years, cycling and hiking trails have been newly created and extended throughout the region. In addition, there are countless meadow and forest paths that are easy to walk and cycle on. Information material is available in our house or via the nature park or the tourist information centres in Altwarp at the harbour (small) and in the seaside resort of Ueckermünde at the castle (larger). Of course, you can also go fishing (map at the harbour), explore nature independently with our own canoe and bike, sail, surf and kite surf.

In spring, many artists open their studios to visitors. In summer there is a varied, diverse and colourful cultural programme in many places. In autumn, you can hear the deer roaring in the garden as they spend the evenings in the dunes and reeds right next to the village, eating the last apples from the trees. Don't worry, they won't damage anything, not even your car, which is very safe here anyway. In winter you can skate on the lagoon. The winter service works very well, we don't know any cut-off villages on the lagoon, as was the case on Rügen in 2010.

The region is very much characterised by nature and is also very sparsely populated. Therefore, it is not as crowded as the Baltic Sea coast, even in the summer season. You can walk or cycle for hours without meeting people, you are alone with nature, the eagles (all 3 species), herons, cranes, beavers, deer, ... The forests are rich in mushrooms and blueberries and in late summer parasol mushrooms grow in the meadows, which are so huge that they look as if they have grown out of a fairy tale. They are edible, relatively worm-free and you don't have to look for them because you can see them from afar across the meadows.

Shopping, restaurants:
On arrival, you will find plenty of tabs for the dishwasher, soap, coffee filters, salt, pepper, tea towels, washing-up liquid, toilet paper, ... The corner shop is about 400 metres away. It is open from 8.00 to 12.00 and from 15.00 to 18.00, on Saturdays until 11.00. Although it is small, it is very well stocked, inexpensive and fresh, rolls, bread, vegetables, fruit, cakes, sausage and cheese not only packaged, but also fresh at the counter, homemade boulettes, ... However, if you are looking for something special or can't find it, the owner of this charming shop, Sabine Knüttel & team, will be happy to help you with her friendliness and support. On your journey you will pass the seaside resort of Ueckermünde, a very pretty seaside town, where you will find all the specialist shops, discount stores, banks, cinema, railway station, ...

There are three restaurants in Altwarp, which are also open in winter. All of them offer fresh, delicious fish dishes. There are also two fish shops at the harbour and in the dunes, run by the Altwarp fishermen during the season, with a smokehouse, roaster and restaurant, offering excellent value for money. There is also a hairdressing salon and a nurse in the village. There are many other restaurants and cafés along the way that are also open in winter, such as the upmarket restaurant "Roter Butt" or the traditional "BackBord" in Ueckermünde.
Excursions: Usedom is an hour's drive away if you want to immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the spas. On the island, we recommend the Amber Spa, Stolpe Castle, Mellenthin moated castle, the GDR Museum in Dargen or the bison enclosure.

Szczecin is also an hour away, with good bus connections from Ueckermünde. The city is characterised by culture and art with its own opera and philharmonic orchestra, inexpensive shopping at the Polish market and luxury shopping in boutiques, ... Cars were always safe on the German side and are now safe on the Polish side too.

Boat routes lead to Usedom and Poland, from Altwarp with a picturesque old wooden fishing boat or from Ueckermünde. A replica of a large historic Hanseatic cog is moored in the harbour there. You can sail from a nearby harbour on a historic Zeesen boat or hire modern boats for your own tours. A trip to the smallest Polish town of Neuwarp with its renovated town centre, a new marina, promenade, observation tower and beach is just a short hop across the lagoon on a beautiful old fishing boat.
Not far from Altwarp there is a beautifully built Slavic settlement and a medieval village in Ukranenland near Torgelow, all of which are also ideal for children. There is also the botanical garden in Christians Berg with its famous choir performances. In Ueckermünde, we recommend: the castle of the Pomeranian dukes with its museum, the zoo, the beautifully renovated old town, the cultural centre, the town church in its original baroque state, where concerts are often held, excursions in the harbour with a replica of a Hanseatic cog and the Peters shipping company, the pier with its imperial-era beach café and large beach, with play equipment for children, lifeguards, beach chairs, areas for nudists and dogs.

All the beaches in the region are well-kept, white and fine sandy with water quality constantly monitored by the state authority.

The international Giulio Perotti singing competition takes place in Ueckermünde every two years, as well as various fishing and harbour festivals in the surrounding villages and small towns. Also worth mentioning are the annual Haff Sail in the seaside resort of Ueckermünde and the meetings of international traditional sailors in Szczecin and Rostock. Wellness in two larger hotels in neighbouring towns and in the seaside resort of Ueckermünde. Summer medieval spectacles in the region. For culture lovers who would like to experience even more, we recommend a trip to the Hanseatic city of Greifswald (1 hour) or the World Heritage Site of Stralsund (2 hours), surely the most magnificent Hanseatic city in Germany. And of course the opera in the ducal Pomeranian and later royal Prussian palace in Szczecin and the philharmonic orchestra in its own new building. There are many other classical concerts and musical events throughout the region throughout the year. Berlin is also only 180 kilometres, or 2 hours, away if you would like to make a detour there.

Leisure/sporting activities:
These are just a few examples: Water skiing, surfing and kite schools in Karls Hagen or Zinnowitz Kiting in the lagoon Climbing forest in Ueckermünde Golfing e.g. Baltic Hills Golf Usedom resp. Balmer See in Benz Many, very well-developed hiking and cycling trails, plus many good forest and meadow paths through the coastal landscape Bowling/skittles in nearby Bellin Sauna lovers can relax and unwind in the Hotel Haff Huus in Bellin Fun pool/heath pool in Torgelow Larger play equipment for children: There is some play equipment for children, a climbing ship, swings, ... and volleyball, beach ball. There is also a beautifully designed football pitch on the other side of the village below the old windmill.
